Olympiad
IMO and maths olympiad preparation for Classes 1–10
Olympiad papers reward reasoning more than recall. This page explains what that means in practice, and how to build olympiad readiness on top of regular school study rather than alongside it.
What olympiad questions actually test
A school question usually asks a concept in the shape it was taught. An olympiad question takes the same concept and hides it: it combines two or three ideas, adds a real-world or puzzle framing, or asks for a pattern instead of a value. The mathematics involved is normally within the student's class syllabus — the difficulty comes from choosing the right approach quickly.
- •Logical reasoning: sequences, patterns, coding, arrangements and odd-one-out.
- •Number sense: mental estimation, divisibility and quick arithmetic under time pressure.
- •Applied problem solving: multi-step word problems built on ordinary syllabus topics.
- •Geometry and spatial thinking: shapes, symmetry, nets and visual reasoning.
A practice routine that works
1. Make the school chapter solid first
Olympiad practice on a shaky chapter teaches frustration, not reasoning. Use class-wise topic practice until accuracy on the chapter is steady.
2. Add reasoning-heavy questions on the same topic
Immediately after a chapter is comfortable, attempt harder questions from that same chapter. The link between the concept and its harder use stays visible.
3. Practise short and often
A few difficult questions several times a week beats one long weekend session. Olympiad skill is built by repeated exposure to unfamiliar framings.
4. Take timed mock tests before the exam
Full-length timed papers train the two things reasoning practice alone cannot: pacing and the decision to skip a question and return to it.
5. Review every mistake by cause
Separate careless slips from concept gaps from time-outs. Each needs a different fix, and only the second requires going back to the chapter.
Class-wise olympiad practice
Olympiad questions are drawn from the same chapters a student studies in school, so the fastest route is to start from your class's maths page and then push into harder questions on each topic.
Common questions
When should olympiad preparation start?
Whenever the school chapter is already understood. Olympiad work is an extension of the syllabus, never a substitute for it.
Does olympiad practice help with school exams?
Usually yes, indirectly: students who practise unfamiliar framings tend to be less thrown by an unexpected question in a school paper.
What should parents look at?
Consistency and the trend in accuracy on hard questions, rather than a single test score.
